The fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center is a combination of invaluable clinical experience, teaching and research opportunities.  Our hospital is a tertiary medical center, Level 1 Trauma Center and the largest hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area.  We have very busy regional anesthesia and acute pain services with a diverse patient population.

Our fellows will become experts in the placement and management of a wide variety of peripheral nerve blocks, continuous nerve block catheters and thoracic epidurals.  They gain experience with the management of complex patients with acute pain through regional and neuraxial techniques as well as multimodal analgesia including low-dose ketamine and lidocaine infusions.  Our fellows also become autonomous and learn how to lead regional and acute pain services.  Additionally, they learn from a talented faculty pool of nationally-recognized speakers, book authors and fellowship-trained experts. Our fellows participate in a variety of educational activities including journal clubs, case conference, the ASRA Spring meeting, a cadaver lab workshop, a regional ultrasound workshop with neighboring academic institutions and a research project.  Quality improvement projects are encouraged as well.   Mock oral board and OSCE training by faculty including ABA board examiners is also offered to our fellows.  Furthermore, our fellows are instrumental in teaching residents and medical students while they rotate on the Regional and Acute Pain services.

After the first three months of fellowship, our fellows will work part-time (50%) as clinical instructor-level faculty.  This is a beneficial opportunity for our fellows to evolve into competent Consultant Anesthesiologists as well as Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine specialists.  Accordingly, compensation and benefits are competitive.

The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management of the University Health Network and the University of Toronto offers a 12-month fellowship training program in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management at the Toronto Western Hospital. Our training program aims to confer both the clinical proficiency and academic knowledge that a consultant regional anesthesiologist in modern anesthetic practice requires.

A total of 4 fellowship places are offered each year, beginning in July. Applications should be made at least 18 months in advance, and shortlisted candidates should be prepared to travel to Toronto for a site visit and interview. Final selection decisions are generally made 1 year in advance of the start date.

Clinical Experience

The Toronto Western Hospital performs approximately 3,000 regional anesthesia procedures each year. These are organized around a block room model.

Fellows will gain both organizational skills related to regional anesthesia as well as technical expertise in a variety of peripheral nerve block techniques performed for orthopedics, plastics, and general surgery. Under the direct supervision of an attending regional anesthesiologist, fellows will learn to perform interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, and axillary brachial plexus blocks, as well as distal forearm blocks of individual nerves. Lower extremity blocks routinely performed at our institution include femoral, sciatic, popliteal, and ankle blocks. Fellows will also gain expertise in continuous catheter perineural infusion techniques for both the upper and lower extremities, as well as neuraxial blocks. Fellows will master the fundamental skills of ultrasound –guided intervention, which will allow them to apply it to virtually any procedure.

Fellows will also participate in the Acute Pain Service rotation and non-regional anesthesia cases during the training year. The Acute Pain Service manages approximately 2,000 patients per year including some referrals with challenging chronic and cancer pain.

On non-regional days and on call, fellows will have clinical exposure to the other surgical specialties at Toronto Western Hospital, which include neurosurgery, major spine surgery, general surgery, bariatric surgery, urology, and interventional radiology.

Research Experience

Regional anesthesia fellows will be allocated to spend 20% of their time in research and educational activities. There is a strong academic focus at Toronto Western Hospital, and fellows are expected to demonstrate commitment to academic work. Under direct staff supervision, regional anesthesia fellows are expected to initiate at least one research project and prepare at least one research protocol during the training year. There is ample opportunity to participate in research projects already underway in various stages from data collection to manuscript preparation, as well as to assist in the authorship of monographs and book chapters. Fellows are expected to present their research at national and international meetings as well as publish their work in high-impact journals. Our current areas of research include ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blockade and neuraxial blockade, education and training in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, complications of regional anesthesia, outpatient pain management techniques, and anesthetic applications of diagnostic ultrasound.

Education

Regular Regional rounds are held at the departmental level throughout the year which will include journal discussions, case discussions, and didactic presentations. Fellows are expected to participate in these rounds to gain experience in presentation and teaching. The group conducts several regional anesthesia workshops throughout the year in which fellows are expected to participate, first as attendees, and then as faculty.

Teaching Experience

Fellows are expected to assume a teaching role and instruct both junior and senior residents in regional anesthesia techniques. Fellows will also have opportunities to further develop teaching skills as faculty at many of the educational initiatives offered by our Department of Anesthesia, including our quarterly Hands-On Ultrasound for Regional Anesthesia Workshops, the annual Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Conference, and bi-annual International Symposium on Ultrasound in Regional Anesthesia in Pain Medicine.

Candidates must have completed specialty training by the time of commencement of fellowship, to a level equivalent to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification.

ACGME approved fellowship: There is presently no sub-specialty certification

Fellowships commence on July 1st of each year. Applications are due at least 18 months in advance of the start date. The application must include a letter of intent (stating the desired start date, and describing personal goals in undertaking the fellowship as well as future career objectives), curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation.

Applications are reviewed in January-March of the preceding year, and shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview. Candidates are strongly encouraged to visit the department prior to the interview if possible. Successful candidates will be notified at least 12 months in advance of the commencement date. Applications received less than 15 months before the desired start date can only be considered in the event that unexpected openings occur in the program.

The Fellowship in Regional Anesthesia at Tulane University is a 12-month program that provides the opportunity to gain clinical expertise in a wide range of peripheral and neuraxial blocks. There is a focus on ultrasound-guided techniques. The Departments of Sports Medicine and Orthopedics are among the busiest clinical services provided at Tulane, and we provide inpatient and outpatient continuous peripheral nerve blocks for a majority of those surgical patients. Our Regional Fellows perform an average of over 400 procedures (mostly continuous catheters), and supervise residents for many more. There is an emphasis on clinical experience and teaching, as well as an expectation to engage in scholarly activities and research.

The fellowship is a non-ACGME accredited program, thus allowing the fellow to be given a Tulane University School of Medicine academic appointment at the Instructor level.  Fellows spend 50% of their time performing procedures and supervising residents in the block area (with no concurrent clinical responsibilities), and the other 50% of their time is spent as an Anesthesiology faculty member supervising CRNAs and/or residents in a wide variety of surgical cases.

The University of British Columbia offers a 12-month fellowship in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine based at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver BC, Canada.  St. Paul’s Hospital features a busy block room associated with the main operating rooms which is staffed daily with a dedicated Anesthesiologist and an Anesthesia Assistant.  In addition, our facility operates a high-volume outpatient operating room area where extremity surgeries are performed solely under regional anesthesia techniques.  As of 2020 we have launched a third block room at our sister community hospital (Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital) where we provide regional anesthesia for predominantly breast surgery (paravertebral blocks and interfascial plane / truncal blocks) as well as a variety of other ambulatory plastic surgery and general surgery cases.  Between our three block areas, approximately 3,500 regional anesthesia techniques are performed annually.

Our practice includes a diverse mix of ultrasound guided upper and lower extremity nerve blocks, continuous perineurial catheter insertions, ambulatory “home” perineural catheter analgesia, truncal blocks, regional anesthesia for cardiac surgery, and neuraxial techniques.  The regional anesthesia fellow will gain ample experience in the performance of these techniques, and progress to the teaching and supervision of anesthesia residents during their regional anesthesia rotations.  Fellows will also participate in acute pain service rounds one week out of six, longitudinally throughout their fellowship year.  The acute pain service week will require on-call availability, but on-call is taken from home with most issues resolved over the phone.  In addition to the clinical experience, fellows will gain considerable experience in block room management, patient flow through the block area, and organization of anesthesia assistants and resident learners in a busy block room environment.

Research or a quality improvement/quality assurance project is mandatory, and fellows are expected to complete a project over the course of their fellowship year.  20% of time (1 day per week) is protected for research and other academic endeavors.  Fellows will provide anesthetic care in the main operating rooms one to two days per week, across all surgical services offered at St. Paul’s Hospital - with the exception of cardiac surgery rooms.

Teaching opportunities are plentiful and fellows will expand their clinical teaching skills over the course of the year.  Fellows are expected to present departmental rounds and lead a regional anesthesia focused journal club discussion once during their fellowship.  There are frequent opportunities to teach regional anesthesia skills to resident learners, and fellows may be invited to instruct ultrasound techniques at the annual Whistler Anesthesiology Summit, depending on the workshops offered that year.

Electronic submission is preferred. Candidates should have completed a Canadian residency and be FRCPC certified or eligible at the time of application. FRCA, ABA, and FANZCA candidates are also eligible to apply.  Please submit a curriculum vitae, letter of intent, and three letters of reference at the email provided below - it is preferred if letters of reference are sent directly from referees, in PDF format.

Description

Starting in 1993 the UC San Diego Pain Medicine Fellowship has offered specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain syndromes, cancer, and acute pain. Our fellows learn to employ a multidimensional treatment approach that includes physical therapies, pharmacologic agents, psychological therapies, alternative medicine therapies, as well as a broad array of interventional techniques. The program’s multidisciplinary training of pain fellows includes core faculty from anesthesia, PM&R, and neurology. Fellows also receive training from guest lecturers and rotation faculty from psychiatry, psychology, palliative medicine, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, and physical therapy. We accept fellowship applicants from any discipline that offers ABMS certification in pain medicine, including: anesthesia, physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurology, psychiatry, and others. Clinical training occurs primarily at UC San Diego Health System’s Center for Pain Medicine outpatient and procedures clinics in La Jolla and at San Diego Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) pain clinic and pain procedure suite, also in La Jolla, California. Additionally, fellows consult on inpatients at UC San Diego’s La Jolla and Hillcrest Hospitals. Fellows have rotations in psychiatry, neuroradiology and palliative care. Each fellow receives four weeks of research time in order to concentrate on a project of their choosing. Fellows are paired with a research mentor who works closely with them throughout the 12-month fellowship. Lectures on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, diagnosis, and management of pain are held weekly and cover a wide range of topics required by the ACGME. Pain medicine grand rounds are also held weekly and include M&M case conferences, multidisciplinary grand rounds with our pain psychologists, palliative care service joint case conferences, journal clubs, radiology rounds, and research forums.  All fellows take a graduate level neuroscience course on mechanisms of pain taught by UC San Diego pain clinical and research faculty.

All applications to this program are to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®).

The University of Cincinnati’s Department of Anesthesiology proudly offers a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. Our program is designed to ensure optimal patient care while providing trainees the opportunity to develop their technical skills and enhance their expertise as a perioperative pain physician.

The fellow will become proficient in providing comprehensive perioperative pain care for all patients undergoing surgery at UC Health. The regional anesthesia and acute pain fellow will be an integral part of the acute inpatient pain services at University of Cincinnati Medical Center and West Chester Hospital. The fellow will be expected to perform a high volume and variety of regional anesthetic techniques. Their training will include all aspects of perioperative pain control, including multimodal, non-opioid options available to patients throughout their perioperative course. Being at a major academic center, the fellow will have the opportunity to participate in scholarly activities, including research studies, quality improvement projects, academic presentations, and trainee education.

Fellows will rotate at a variety of sites that provide a robust and diverse experience. The fellow will work at high volume surgery centers, becoming proficient at perioperative regional procedures and ambulatory anesthesia. They will spend time on the inpatient pain service at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center, where they will become experts in perioperative pain control for all surgeries and patient populations. Their time at West Chester Hospital will give them a chance to provide excellent perioperative pain care in a suburban, community hospital setting. A rotation at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center, a perennially top rated pediatric hospital, will give each fellow valuable insight and training in pediatric regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. The fellow will rotate with the UC Health pain management clinic to learn chronic pain medicine and its significant overlap with acute pain medicine.

Upon graduation, the fellow will be an expert in the field of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. Trainees will be equipped to use their knowledge and skills to provide optimal perioperative pain care for all their patients in both private practice and academic settings.

To provide more consistency and predictability to the Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship application process, the University of Cincinnati fellowship program participates in a common application and match process for recruitment of future fellows. This matching process, provided by SF match, will allow fellowship applicants an opportunity to visit and evaluate various training programs systematically over a large window of time. This resulting match system will provide equity in the recruitment process, create a flexible and comprehensive interview process, and is beneficial to both applicants and programs. Applicants to our fellowship program should register with and apply through the SF Match website below. SF Match will be the central site involved in processing our applications, accepting applicant and program rank lists, and running and publishing the match results.

The non-ACGME approved Regional Anesthesiology Fellowship program at the University of Colorado Denver is a teaching, clinical, and research-oriented program for candidates who want to be experts in the field of Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Management. The University of Colorado Hospital is a large tertiary center with a wide array of patient populations. Our fellows will become experts in the placement of peripheral nerve blocks, nerve block catheters, and thoracic and lumbar epidurals. In addition, they will gain experience managing both surgical and non-surgical pain syndromes in complex patients using regional techniques, multimodal analgesia, ketamine infusions and non-pharmacologic modalities. They will be heavily involved in clinical and didactic teaching of the residents and medical students rotating on service, including Journal Club, APS Anatomy Lab, and formal lectures. We also expect fellows to participate in ongoing research activities, development of ERAS pain protocols and quality improvement projects during their protected educational time.

Fellows are also part-time instructor-level faculty (40%) and are eligible for moonlighting opportunities. Our fellowship is congruent with the proposed ACGME guidelines, although we do not anticipate this being an ACGME-approved fellowship for the referenced academic year. All applicants must be eligible for an unlimited medical license through the Colorado Medical Board and be able to practice as a board-eligible/board-certified anesthesiologist. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens must be legally able to work in the U.S. or eligible to obtain authorization to work. J1 visas do not meet this requirement for non-GME training programs.

This program participates in the San Francisco Match. Submit the completed application directly to the individual Fellowship Program via the SF Match website.
