On behalf of David Provenzano (President 2023-2025), the ASRA Pain Medicine Society leadership, and the 2024 Spring Meeting Program Committee, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 49th Annual Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain (RA&APM) Meeting. Join us in beautiful San Diego, March 21-23, 2024, where you’ll find plenty of sun, surf, seafood, and most of all, three days of scintillating science covering all things RA&APM.

The theme for the 2024 meeting is “Precise, Practical, Personalized, Patient-Centered” pain management. Each of us, patient and practitioner, are unique individuals with unique needs. The emphasis is thus very much centered on clinical decision-making in RA&APM that takes the latest scientific knowledge and techniques, and personalizes care to the patient, the scenario, and the setting.

The Program Committee has worked hard to craft a meeting that will appeal to all of us who are passionate about the art and science of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. We will explore new applications of ultrasound-guided acute pain medicine, and also revisit time-honored techniques and the ways that these can be refined and optimized for modern perioperative care. At the same time, we will hear from field experts in both private and academic practice on how to successfully navigate the current economic realities of health care and arrive at optimal outcomes for our patients with the treatment strategies available to us.

The practice of medicine is not just about interventions and drugs, however. Empathic physician-patient communication and the importance of the mind-body connection are more important than ever. This meeting will feature special talks by invited faculty and keynote speakers on how to harness language, mindset, and other cognitive tools for the well-being of both our patients and ourselves.

There are many more program highlights that my committee and I are excited about, a few of which I’d like to share with you here:

  • On-stage live demonstrations of regional anesthesia (RA) and POCUS techniques by our talented and dynamic faculty
  • Hands-on procedure and context-specific workshops, featuring low participant-instructor ratios, and covering all the RA techniques needed in day-to-day clinical care (and then some)
  • Main-stage presentations of the top abstracts submitted to the meeting to showcase the latest work being done by some of our brightest researchers
  • Patient perspectives on dealing with acute pain and the role for different interventions and management strategies
  • Sessions featuring cross-disciplinary discussion with our surgical and emergency medicine colleagues on how to collaborate towards optimal patient care.

The purpose of a scientific meeting is, I believe, not only to educate, but also to inspire. This will be the third year since the pandemic that the ASRA Pain Medicine community is gathering for a full in-person meeting. There is a unique energy that comes from face-to-face personal connection; as well as an opportunity to share ideas, form new friendships and collaborations, and renew existing ones. It’s been a privilege on my part to lead the design of this meeting in San Diego, and on behalf of the Society, I hope you will leave with renewed knowledge, energy, and inspiration to apply to your personal and professional life.
