Fellowship in The Match®? Yes

Application Deadline: April

Number of Positions Available: 4

Salary: $67,105

Description

The department of anesthesiology offers four positions yearly (three in July and one in January) for a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship supported by Henry Ford Health System, one of the largest and most respected integrated health care delivery systems in the country. The fellowship program began in 2002 and has graduated four fellows per year since its inception. Our fellows utilize the latest technology and train from a highly skilled clinical staff at Henry Ford Hospital, a nationally renowned specialty care, teaching, and research institution that is the flagship of Henry Ford Health System.

Fellows benefit from being exposed to a wide spectrum and large number of patients, as our hospital serves the metropolitan population of Detroit as well as the surrounding suburbs. This provides an exceptional environment for learning because of the multiple populations we serve and the breadth of experience they provide.

The goal of the pain medicine fellowship is to provide trainees with a multidisciplinary environment conducive to acquiring the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes that are essential for becoming an exceptional pain medicine physician. Both the faculty and the sponsoring institution are fully committed to providing the educational programs, resources, and facilities necessary to meet this goal. Fellows will be exposed to a variety of administrative experiences, through participation in departmental committees on curriculum, applicant selection, didactics, quality improvement/assessment, and other committees.

Upon completion of this program, our fellows have acquired the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary to develop their own pain center and are able to evaluate and treat all types of painful conditions, using both conventional and alternative therapies, including the latest invasive technologies.

Fellows receive extensive training in the multidisciplinary evaluation and management of acute pain and both malignant and non-malignant chronic pain. Furthermore, our program is unique in that we offer training in both the pharmacological and psychological management of pain states, as well as training in invasive management including neuromodulation and the placement of spinal cord stimulators, epidural and intrathecal pumps, radiofrequency thermocoagulation, discography, neurolytic blockade, and fluoroscopically guided procedures. In addition, trainees have the opportunity to learn about complementary medical management such as acupuncture and massage therapy.

All applications to this program are to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®).

Description

The one-year, ACMGE-accredited pain medicine fellowship program at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Arizona provides a comprehensive training environment for fellows. As a fellow, you will work closely with numerous faculty members that have shown excellence in graduate medical education. Our faculty works closely with each fellow in order to tailor the program to your specific educational needs and career goals. Core faculty members are trained in anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and psychology.

There is a structured didactic curriculum that has been designed to create success for fellows in clinical practice and to ensure preparation for subspecialty board certification in pain medicine. The core of the program relies on staffing a diverse, interventional pain practice at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. In addition, rotations in private practice, cancer pain, palliative care, headache, neurology, hospice, and pain rehabilitation add to the multidisciplinary education of our pain fellows. A unique one-week anatomy course gives fellows an opportunity to learn and improve on the performance of advanced pain procedures and is one of the highlights of the program. There are also elective educational opportunities available in neuroradiology, electromyography, and pediatric pain as well as global health activities that are funded through the Mayo International Health Program. Fellows also participate in scholarly activity including quality improvement projects, submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at national conferences. Fellows are an integral part of the education of anesthesiology residents and medical students. After successful completion of the pain medicine fellowship, trainees will be highly qualified pain specialists that are ready for the demands of private practice or academics.

The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Anesthesiology has an open integrated fellowships position in its ACGME-accredited Pediatric Pain Medicine Fellowship and Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. The program is 24 months, and candidates will be eligible to sit both the ABA certification examinations pediatric anesthesiology and pain medicine at the conclusion of this dual fellowship training. Desirable candidates should have career interest in an academic position involving pediatric pain leadership, with clinical responsibilities in pediatric chronic and acute pain, pediatric anesthesiology, with potential focus in pediatric regional anesthesia and limited adult or adolescent transitional chronic pain. The fellow will become an expert at provision of pediatric anesthesiology and also in all aspects of pediatric and adult pain management, opioid and adjunctive medication management, and non-interventional and non-pharmacotherapeutic  pain management. Personalized physical and occupational therapy, acupuncture, psychological and cognitive therapies, and regional anesthesia are common treatment modalities. Adequate exposure to interventional pain modalities is provided but this is not the fellowship focus. The model for the typical pediatric pain faculty is to practice some clinical pediatric anesthesiology; trainees seeking 100% pain training and focus should not apply unless already board certified in pediatric anesthesiology (in which case a 12 month continuum will be considered)

The training exposure provides over 18 months of continuity outpatient chronic pain clinical care to children and adults. The fellow will have a didactic “home” in pediatric anesthesiology (year 1) and in pain (year 2). The pain time has approximately 7 blocks focused in adult clinical pain rotations and 5 blocks in pediatric pain.  Clinical rotations include pain and anesthesia time during both fellowship years. During pain blocks, fellows will divide their training between both adult and pediatric services and related specialties (psychiatry, PM and R)  The team includes ACGME Pain Medicine fellows/faculty, pediatric anesthesiology fellows/faculty nurse practitioners, physiatrists, psychologists, anesthesiologists, neurologists as well as strong relationships with surgeons.

Medical College of Wisconsin/the Childrens Hospital is a large training program located in Milwaukee Wisconsin. We encourage you to visit the website for more details. Candidates must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency in Anesthesiology.  The position is for the 2018-2020 academic years.

Montefiore Medical Center is proud to be one of the original 9 ACGME-accredited Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) Fellowships in the United States.

The goal of this fellowship is to provide outstanding, cutting-edge, clinical training skills to create confident practitioners who can run a Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain service independently and to create leaders in the field of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine. The fellowship will provide advanced training in all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine emphasizing clinical skills, teaching, and research. Currently all modern regional techniques, peripheral single-shot nerve blocks and continuous catheter placements and neuraxial techniques, are done. Blocks of the upper & lower extremities and truncal blocks (Pecs, Erector Spinae, QL, Lumbar Plexus, TAP, PVB etc.) are routinely performed under ultrasound guidance (with optional use of nerve stimulation) at all campuses. Apart from learning a wide range of regional anesthetic techniques, fellows will develop further expertise in patient recovery, patient outcomes, peri-operative efficiency, and reduction of hospital costs during their fellowship training.

Fellows will have experience in our:

  • Fast paced, outpatient Ambulatory Center working with various disciplines including general surgery, vascular surgery, gynecologic cases, plastic surgery, and pediatric patients in the block room
  • Orthopedic Joint Replacement Center
  • Robust Acute Pain Service
  • Montefiore Multidisciplinary Pain Center
  • Our dedicated Children's Hospital of Montefiore

Clinical Care:
We perform >6000 nerve blocks a year in a range of clinical environments, including a quick paced ambulatory outpatient setting and various in-patient hospital environments. Each fellow historically has accrued approximately 1,000 nerve blocks upon graduation. Due to growing volume, we have 3 ACGME fellowship positions and 2 non ACGME mixed attending-fellow fellowship positions with a weekday attending role as part of this fellowship

Leadership:
Fellow duties include patient selection and education as well as coordination of the regional anesthesia team's daily activities with the operating room anesthesiologists, surgeons, nursing staff, anesthesia technicians, pharmacists, and the acute pain service.

Academics, Teaching and Research:
Fellows are very involved in resident and medical student teaching and encouraged to participate in academic research.

Education includes Departmental Grand Rounds, a dedicated Fellow's College of important topics, and a core teaching curriculum that covers mandated ACGME topics, PBLDs, and Oral Board preparation. Also, there are multiple hands-on workshops and cadaver labs during the year.

All fellows participate in at least one research project and quality improvement initiatives, including manuscript preparation and data presentation at conferences.

It is expected for all fellows to participate at least 1 academic meeting during the year. Collaboration with colleagues internally and externally is encouraged.

Job Opportunity:
At the completion of the training, fellows will be able to perform a comprehensive array of regional techniques, set up an ambulatory or hospital-based regional service and become prepared for the practice setting of their choice: academic or private. Moonlighting opportunities exist for all fellows.

This program uses the common application. Submit the completed application directly to the individual Fellowship Program.
