The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Pain Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited 12-month (starting and ending in July) training program designed to qualify physicians for specialty certification in pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

All Applications to the Pain Medicine Fellowship program must be submitted using the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).

The regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine fellowship at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN is a non-accredited fellowship providing a unique experience for fellows to learn and work alongside a private practice group within an academic medical center. Our program provides a robust clinical exposure to a multitude of regional anesthesia procedures in both the inpatient setting as well as a brand new, fast-paced, ambulatory orthopedic surgery center. Fellows will also participate in our Multimodal Acute Pain Service alongside our subspeciality pain anesthesiologists and mid-level providers that manage complex acute pain inpatients with a variety of techniques including lidocaine infusions and ketamine infusions. In addition to providing a comprehensive education in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine, fellows will also serve as the staff anesthesiologist supervising operating room cases and fulfill an Instructor faculty position with the Graduate School of Medicine.

Memorial Hermann Hospital is the busiest Level One trauma center in the nation, located in the largest medical center in the world, thereby allowing this regional program to emphasize all aspects of regional anesthesia. The fellows will be exposed to various types of peripheral nerve blocks, as well as placement of indwelling catheters for postoperative pain management using both nerve stimulation and ultrasound.  Between three locations, current procedural caseloads average 3,000 per year. The Regional Anesthesia service also provides acute pain management consults for adult patients. 

Research opportunities: Fellows will have protected research time on a weekly basis, and are required to present at the American Society for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Conference in the spring.   The fellows are also expected to publish at least one article in a peer-reviewed journal.  

Rotations include: Orthopedic Trauma Block Team, Ambulatory Surgery Block Team, Acute Pain Service, Transesophageal Echo, Transthoracic Echo.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) Fellowship is structured to provide supervised training to board-certified or board-eligible anesthesiologists in the practice of regional anesthesia, acute pain management, and medical consultation for the full spectrum of surgical and invasive procedures in the hospital setting.

The goal of this program is to develop expertise in acute pain management as well as in the utilization of regional anesthesia techniques to optimize perioperative analgesia and facilitate patient recovery. This 12-month fellowship program will provide significant exposure and training in the management of acute pain through the use of innovative regional anesthesia techniques, neuraxial anesthesia, implementation of enhanced recovery strategies, and coordination of perioperative care.

MD Anderson serves as one of the largest comprehensive cancer centers in the world, thereby providing the unique opportunity for our fellows to develop additional expertise in managing the care of patients in this clinical environment. Our department provides acute pain management for both adult and pediatric patients with a variety of clinical presentations. Fellows will also have designated time for research opportunities as well as quality improvement projects, with the expectation to present at annual national conferences and work towards publishing in a peer-reviewed journal.

Fellows will pursue a comprehensive 12-month experience in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine.  Training will include peripheral nerve, nerve plexus, truncal blockade and neuraxial procedures and acute pain medicine for surgical and nonsurgical patients including perineural catheters, ultrasound-guided and nerve stimulator localization techniques.  Through a fellowship in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine an individual will progress in his or her development as a perioperative physician and develop the expertise to excel in academic and private practice environments.

The field of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine received approval to create ACGME fellowships in 2016. The structure of the UTSW  fellowship is consistent with these ACGME guidelines. We are currently seeking ACGME accreditation for our fellowship.

This is a clinically focused Fellowship within a fully staffed and equipped dedicated block room that performs over 2000 preoperative regional blocks per year. Ultrasound guidance is standard for all upper and lower extremity blocks. Both single injection and catheter techniques are expected competencies following completion of the Fellowship. Sixty percent of Fellowship time (3 days per week) is dedicated to regional anesthesia practice (clinical 2 days, research 1 day), with the remaining 2 clinical Operating Room days distributed throughout the scope of practice at our full-service adult tertiary care trauma centre.

The University of Utah, Department of Anesthesiology is currently applying for ACGME fellowship accreditation for Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine. We hope to transition to an accredited status for the 2023-2024 fellowship year.

Our fellows are valued colleagues for a service that performs nearly 4500 peripheral nerve blocks and perineural catheters, and 300 thoracic epidurals each year. Fellow also rotate on our acute pain medicine, chronic pain, and cancer pain services. We believe it is important for our fellows to maintain fluency in the operating room, so part of their clinical time is spent in the operating room performing anesthesia. Description

Interventional Multidisciplinary Pain Fellowship

The fellow’s year on the pain services is spent in the (chronic) Pain Management Center (PMC) and on the In-Hospital Consult Service (CPS). Approximately 60% of the time is spent in the PMC. This time is divided between clinic, seeing 8-10 patients per day, and performing 15-18 interventional procedures per day. These procedures encompass a varied assortment of pain management techniques. The daily clinic schedule is a blend of patients new to the system and revisits. 20% of the time is spent leading the CPS which runs a daily census of 5-10 consult patients. 20% of the fellow’s time is dedicated to the ACGME mandated rotations which include physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, neurology, and anesthesiology/airway management. Fellows rotate through the services that are not their primary specialty. Generally, these rotations are two weeks long.

The Regional Anesthesia Fellowship is designed to give advanced clinical, technical and research training in the field of regional anesthesia. Locations will include the University of Virginia Medical Center and the newly built Outpatient Surgical Center. The University of Virginia performs more than 5,000 peripheral nerve blocks and catheters annually. Clinical work will be comprised of 80% fellow/20% faculty position. Additional time will be allocated to research endeavors and conference attendance. The University provides a nurturing and supportive environment with regional nurse coordinators and significant faculty support. No required weekends or call but opportunity for additional salary supplementation with weekend work.

$3,000.00 is Professional Fund for conferences, books, and additional educational endeavors. There is also opportunity to supplement income with additional work on weekends though not required.

Description

Our department of approximately 80 faculty includes 11 full-time regional-trained faculty with a representative expertise in many areas. Our RAAPM fellowship training has been in existence since 2009, and officially became ACGME accredited in 2020.  We offer 4 positions in RAAPM training: 2 ACGME-accredited fellowship positions and 2 clinical instructorships. Both tracks include dedicated, cutting-edge training in regional anesthesia, but they offer unique differences in operating room anesthesia management options and elective time.

Clinical experience within the one-year fellowship will include perioperative rotations focusing on RAAPM at our 32 operating room main hospital campus, our 12 operating room Outpatient Surgical Center, and our new stand-alone 6 operating room Orthopedic Center. Trainees will also integrate into Acute Pain Service (APS) which provides care for our medical and surgical patients within our 800-bed hospital. We also pride ourselves on offering fellow-level education in Point of Care Ultrasound techniques to achieve certification in this area. 

Our busy division performs more than 12,000 regional blocks and catheters annually for our patients, more than 2500 neuraxial techniques, and the APS fields more than 2100 consults. There is protected education time for weekly fellow level didactic lectures, and financial support for meetings and educational resources.

The University of Washington’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine offers 3 clinical fellowship positions in Regional Anesthesia based at UWMC and at HMC. The regional fellow will devote 60% of their effort to academic activities related to regional anesthesia, including learning advanced regional anesthesia techniques from our national and internationally known faculty experts, teaching and supervising residents, and performing clinical research. The fellowship is divided between research, education and clinical experience obtained as a fellow in regional anesthesia and faculty supervising residents/anesthetists for a variety of surgical procedures. 

Clinical experience will be divided between the main University of Wisconsin campus (a Level I trauma center with active transplant, general surgery, breast, thoracic and cardiac programs) and a satellite center providing regional anesthesia services for a high-volume orthopedics practice. Upper and lower extremity peripheral nerve and plexus blocks, continuous catheter techniques for postoperative pain treatment, paravertebral techniques, fascial plane blocks and central neuraxial techniques (spinal, thoracic epidural and combined spinal-epidural) are extensively utilized to provide perioperative pain management.  Comprehensive multimodal perioperative pain management training is provided via experience with lidocaine and ketamine infusions.  Experience with chronic pain management may also be obtained via work with fellowship trained chronic pain Anesthesiologists. 

 Clinical experience is supplemented with training in a high-fidelity simulation center, journal club and cadaver lab experience.  Efforts are made to augment clinical training with research and presentation experience.

 This fellowship is located in Madison, WI - a vibrant, collegiate city surrounded by five lakes and miles of biking/hiking trails located in southeastern Wisconsin.  Madison is an open and diverse community and is consistently ranked highly on a number of “Best City for X” rankings.

Description

Fellows are trained by multidisciplinary faculty in outpatient pain & spine clinics. Approximately 50% of time is in interventional pain management, training in fluoro and ultrasound guided procedures, and advanced skills training including SCS, DRG, PNS implants, pain pumps. Other clinical experiences include acute pain, headache & facial pain, palliative care, outpatient & inpatient pediatric pain, pain psychiatry & pain psychology, addiction medicine, and radiology. Rigorous didactics 3 to 5 days/week, weekly board prep, monthly journal clubs, evidence based medicine series, and IPM lectures and didactics by multidisciplinary faculty are also incorporated. Research requirement, infrastructure, and support staff is available to help with research. Opportunities for working with faculty on publications is provided. Events include Research Day, simulation center activity, cadaver labs, spine & nerve/plexus anatomy, suture skills training, FR & SCS/DRG courses, and mindfulness meditation.

Vanderbilt's Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine fellowship was established in 2009 and accredited during the first cycle of accreditation for the specialty in the Fall of 2016. The program accepts 2 fellows each year, with expansion to 3 fellows per year under consideration by the ACGME (determination in Jan 2022). The fellowship is split between several sites.

Description

The department of anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University is proud to direct the institution’s first and only multidisciplinary pain management fellowship. Accredited by the ACGME in 2008, our fellowship combines extensive experience with advanced interventional techniques in addition to rotations in regional anesthesia, addiction psychiatry, neurology, radiology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cancer pain, and palliative care. Trainees in the fellowship program will be extensively exposed to strategies of pain management by both anesthesiologists and faculty from other disciplines. The fellows, regardless of their primary specialty, should be competent in pain assessment, formulation, and coordination of a multiple modality treatment plan, integration of pain treatment with primary disease management and palliative care, and interaction with members of a disciplinary team.

The regional anesthesia fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA is designed to provide a well-rounded experience through clinical care, education, research, and professional development. Fellows gain experience in a wide range of skills associated with regional anesthesiology utilizing various techniques to perform single shot and catheter blocks. Each fellow will personally perform and supervise residents in over 1500 blocks during the fellowship year, including upper and lower extremity catheters as well as paravertebral and truncal blocks. The fellows are intimately involved with the inpatient pain consult service, which allows them to evaluate and treat patients with challenging medical and surgical conditions. In addition, fellows spend an average of two days per week as an attending anesthesiologist doing a mix of general operating room cases. This allows the fellow to maintain their clinical anesthesiology skills and make supplemental income. Each fellow receives a stipend in professional funds for conferences, books, and additional academic endeavors. Lastly, the regional anesthesia fellowship prepares trainees to evaluate pertinent literature, develop and conduct original clinical or basic science research projects, and present such work at national and international academic meetings. To enhance the academic mission, the fellows have dedicated time to focus on ongoing research opportunities.

Fellow performance will be assessed based on clinical and didactic curriculum completion and rotation-specific goals and objectives, as well as fulfillment of ACGME case log and duty hour reporting requirements. Fulfillment of program accountabilities, including rotational and administrative obligations as well as attendance requirements, is required for successful completion of this pain medicine fellowship. Fellows will receive informal feedback on a monthly basis. Formal evaluations will be conducted semi-annually, concurrent with ABA training report submission requirements.
